The IR(R) allows you to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) in the UK, building significant piloting confidence and making your flying less restrictive.
The IR(R) Privilege
Fly in IFR conditions within the UK, with the following exceptions:
- Flight in Class A airspace is prohibited.
- No take-off/landing if visibility is below 1500m.
Entry Requirements
Experience and licensing criteria
Who can obtain an IR(R)?
- Licence: Must hold a PPL(A) or higher.
- National: Endorsed onto UK aeroplane licences only.
- Airspace: UK use only unless permitted elsewhere.
Experience Required
- Total: 25 hours flying time post-PPL.
- PIC: 10 hours as Pilot in Command.
- XC: 5 hours of cross-country as PIC.
