You are considering obtaining a Private Pilot’s Licence, you’ve likely started researching the process. To ensure you have all the necessary information, here is a comprehensive overview of the requirements.
THE 9 GROUND SCHOOL SUBJECTS
Before taking your flight skills test you must have successfully passed the following 9 theory exams:
Air Law
Rules of the air and aviation regulations.
Human Performance
Physiology and psychology for pilots.
Meteorology
Weather patterns, forecasts, and flight safety.
Communications
Radio telephony procedures and phraseology.
Principles of Flight
How aeroplanes fly: aerodynamics and physics.
Operational Procedures
Standard operating practices and safety.
Flight Performance
Mass, balance, and take-off performance.
Aircraft General
Engines, airframes, and systems knowledge.
Navigation
Dead reckoning, charts, and flight planning.
These exams remain valid for 24 months from the date of passing the last exam. I f you do not complete your flight training and pass the skills test within this timeframe, you will need to retake the exams.
LICENCE REQUIREMENTS
You need at least a Class 2 Medical Certificate from a CAA-authorised Aeromedical Examiner (AME). We recommend obtaining this early in your training.
You can start logging flight hours at any age, but you must be 14 to log hours, 16 for your first solo, and 17 for licence issuance.
All 9 exams must be passed within an 18-month period. Once the final exam is passed, they remain valid for 24 months toward your licence issue.
In addition to the 9 written exams, you will also complete a practical Radio Telephony exam to earn your FRTOL.
